Frequently Asked Questions
Can Lotus Oils products be eaten / consumed or used in food?
We sell raw materials for skincare and aromatherapy so our oils are sold for cosmetic use – we are not a food factory and not certified to pack to food hygiene standards. If taken internally it is at your own risk (although some people knowing this will still take our products internally).
Do you make the oils?
No, we function as a dispensary with a number of suppliers locally and abroad
Are any products tested on animals?
No, Lotus Oils do not test on animals and our main suppliers are cruelty-free certified
Are essential oils safe to use around Babies/children
Can smells be dangerous? That is a difficult thing to quantify - it depends upon the oil itself. Babies are best to keep away from any essential oil inhaled or applied topically. They have very sensitive skin and may react. Children should not have oils diffused in close proximity for long periods without speaking to your health practitioner. Then we suggest trialling a small amount in a diffuser for a short period first to determine if there is any apparent sensitivity. Always keep your oils out of the reach of children and pets, and if a child accidently drinks a bottle of essential oil seek medical attention immediately (phone NZ Poison Centre 0800 764 766)
Do you have Organic Certification for oils?
Yes, Certificates are available on request for large unopened containers. Lotus Oils is not an Organically certified premises so once a container is opened the product will lose it’s organic status.
Do your products carry expiry dates
No, most oils will have a minimum shelf life of 18 months to 2 years (or more depending on the components of the oil), or longer if stored correctly. Citrus oils will expire the fastest – you can lengthen the time by storing in the fridge.
Why has my oil gone hard (Rose, Peppermint, Jojoba), has it gone off?
No, certain oils “winterise” meaning they solidify and go hard below certain temperatures. Just put in a warm place (like in your hand or pocket) or stand at ambient temperature for a few hours and it will turn liquid again. Smell is the best indicator as to whether any oil has gone ‘off’
Why is the Organic Aloe Brown in colour?
Our Aloe Vera Gels are made from powders that have been reconstituted into liquid form. The Preservative used on the Organic is brown and smells like vanilla (Natacide) where the conventionally grown Aloe has clear constituents added.
Is your Sweet Almond Oil Cold Pressed?
Our normal Sweet Almond is expeller pressed but we do sell Cold Pressed Sweet Almond – look for CP in the title
Does our Zinc Oxide contain Nano-particles?
Our Zinc oxide is Plain cosmetic grade Zinc Oxide, not coated with anything and is micronized (but does not contain Nano-particles)
What is the best Rose essential oil you have? What extraction method is used?
We sell Rose Maroc, Rose Bulgarian, and Rose Damask (think of it like different regions for wine – with slight differences in smell). We do not sell a Rose oil extracted by steam, only solvent extraction.
Do you sell true Hydrosols or just oil mixed into water?
The following are true hydrosols: NZ Rose Water, Organic Sandalwood and non-organic Sandalwood, NZ Lavender , Organic Rose Otto ( Bulgarian), Organic Lavender Bulgarian, Manuka. The rest are Floral waters - which are oils mixed into water.
What is the difference between Cold Pressed and Expeller Pressed?
Expeller Pressed oil uses friction which heats the oil, and Cold Pressed oil uses a process that cools down the machine during pressing
Are all your oils 100 % pure with no fillers or synthetics added?
Our essential oils are 100% pure (except the 3% dilutions which are labelled as such). Only the Fragrance/Nature identical oils are man-made which is clearly stated on the label
What are the differences between the Lavender?
Apart from the varietal differences in lavender oils (i.e. Latin names Grosso and Angustifolia) think of it like wine. Different regions produce different characteristics to the oil, we stock a range of Angustifolia's from different regions in France , as well as NZ grown Lavender
What is the Difference in Essential Oils and Nature Identical / PC oils?
Premium Commercial oils are manufactured from a proprietary blend of 100% pure Essential Oils (minimum 20%), natural, naturally derived and nature identical ingredients. They are most suitable for buyers looking for best price for aromatic purposes.
